Synopsis

"The Railroad" (Gyeongui Seon) premiered at last year's 11th Pusan International Film Festival and received favorable criticism from critics and audiences. The film participated in the New Current section; together with "Driving With My Wife's Lover"

Director Park Heung-shik's melodrama features two damaged souls who both end up stranded at the last train stop before the DMZ on a night of heavy snow. The man and the woman find comfort in each other's presence while they are forced to pass time together.

The Railroad is Park Heung-shik's second feature film and it was part of the 2005 KOFIC Production Support for Low-budget Films program. The male lead is played by Kim Kang-woo ("Silmido") and Son Tae-yeong ("Sad Movie") portrays the female protagonist.

The movie ("The Railroad") reflects director Park's experiences. Having studied German abroad, he made the main female character a German lecturer. He once saw a woman who looked suicidal in Taejongdae, Busan. The storyline follows a woman who reveals her inner scars while talking to a man in a similar situation.

The main characters meet at the "Gyeongui Line", which was disconnected but is soon to be reconnected. The man and woman meet and proceed to heal each other's wounds as the railroad is reconnected. To director Park, that is the meaning of life and marriage. The movie's portrayal of the two characters' realistic personal issues reflects his own experiences.

One night, a man and a woman, both drunk and both lost souls, get on the last train at different stations. However, other then being drunk, the two have something else in common -- they are emotionally hurt in one way or another. These two find themselves at the last stop, just before the DMZ, on a heavy snowy night. They have no other choice but to spend the night together. As time goes by, they learn to reveal their inner pains to each other.
